Earlier this year, I made a porcelain wall sculpture, Liberty Leaps, to express what it could feel like to have a voice and an opinion that counts. Liberty was originally created for a Pajaro Valley Arts exhibition entitled, “Your Vote Is Your Voice.”
Much of the history presented in the exhibition chronicled the struggles of our local community organizers that led to the landmark case, Delores Cruz Gomez v. the City of Watsonville. Reaching the Supreme Court, this case set the precedent for district-based local electoral systems. The exhibition celebrated the grassroots workers who risked their lives for voting rights and our Liberty Leaps with the exuberance of freedom.
